ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Apr. 30, 2019 – On Friday May 3, the BarBurrito at 165 N Queen St will be hosting a food drive in support of Daily Bread Food Bank in Etobicoke. If you bring a food donation to help fight hunger in the community, you can get a burrito for only $5.

Etobicoke is home to one of the highest poverty rates in the GTA. According to a 2018 report, the unemployment rate in Etobicoke North was 10.6% and 37% of children under the age of 6 were living in poverty. Daily Bread reported that there were almost 150,000 visits to food banks in Etobicoke, which has gone up 170% over the last decade.

Speaking to The Toronto Star, Gary Williams revealed how he became homeless at 16 after running away from a foster home. For 12 years, he slept wherever he could find shelter until he met his wife and started a family. With the help of Daily Bread, where he also volunteers, they are able to support their family of six.

Daily Bread distributes fresh produce, non-perishable food, and ready-made hot meals to over 100 member agencies. Last year, they distributed 10 million pounds of food and delivered 5000 hot meals weekly to individuals in need. Their 20-20 Vision is a commitment that 20 low-income neighbourhoods will get 20% more food, with 4 of the neighbourhoods located in Etobicoke.

« We want to give back to the community that welcomed us so openly », explains BarBurrito franchisee Shreya Sutaria. « You never really know who is in need – it could be our customers, our neighbours, our employees. » Sutaria is one of four partners of the BarBurrito on N Queen St that opened up 4 months ago near Sherway Gardens.
